B-Bender

Bridge that’s made of steps, a metal grate and I see through it,
And I’ve got to catch my breath, there’s no railing to my left.
Just goes up above the railway tracks and towers over what it lacks,
But once I’ve reached the final step, there’s no planks on the bridge to catch
My feet, I start to shake, tops of trees I’ve never seen,
Nests of birds from up above, now I’m stranded on the top
Of the stairs that touch the stars at night, and me I tremble with a fright,
It’s a nature way avoiding height by turning knees to troglodyte.
Shudders in a resonant wave, I’m on all fours above my grave,
So many stories I’ve waylaid, B B B B B B B-Bender.

Bridge without a floor, just a scaffold with no door,
And it’s all to pass across a place below where I was lost
In the brambles of the troubled mind, I’m setting traps for feet to find
A brier patch of wasted deeds and I just wanted across the street.
Callouses attach and my fingers metal grasp,
And I cannot even gasp, froze in space above the lands
Of the rail industrial desolation, soil to factor oiled up stations,
Crows are laughing at my trouble, platform with a shaking bundle.
Bones begin to vibrate rivets, loosened in the structure’s divots,
Please replace the missing grass, rise five stories up the lands
Below to meet my Icarus, I’d like to give these wax wings back,
Climb down the staircase like a crab, and on the ground I’ll kiss the land.

I knew this was a dream when the ghost came up to me
Just to empathize my need, pointed out down on the street
That a crossing’s been there all along, I did not need to go aloft,
The way was laid in front of me but I didn’t trust to follow feet.
Across on the dry land the cars carry on with me overhead
From a string I wait for death when my frozen fingers unattach
Or if I descend on my scared ass to the ground, I’ll never fly again.
Would I do it again? they said. No, but I’m glad I did.
